The first class fare for a journey between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on the Duronto Express is priced at Rs 2,200. This means that for a 508 km run between two cities via a high speed dedicated corridor would cost around Rs 3,300. The total journey time on bullet train would be around 2.07 hours. Where as Duronto Express takes around seven hours to cover the same distance between the two financial capitals.

In Japan similarly, a 550 km run between Tokyo and Osaka on the Shinkansen (Japan’s bullet train network), costs around Rs 8,500. The Indian service is modeled on Japan’s bullet train network. Manoj Singh from the Ministry of Railways announced that the first phase of the Indian network will have a maximum designed speed of 350km per hour and an operating speed of 320 km per hour. The ministry expects around 36,000 commuters to use the bullet train service daily both ways by 2023 which will go up to 186,000 by the year 2053. The ministry is planning a total of 12 stations on the route - Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

Passengers can enjoy the thrill of riding under the sea while travelling between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the first bullet train of the country. The high speed rail corridor will have a 21 km long tunnel under the sea. Most part of the corridor is proposed to be on the elevated track but a stretch between Thane and Vihar will travel under the sea.

Considering the extension plan, a feasibility study is under way between Delhi and Nagpur as part of the New Delhi Chennai corridor through government to government cooperation with China. In a debate in LokSabha, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in reply to the criticism on bullet trains said that the government has managed to get a soft loan of Rs 1 lakh crore from Japan at an interest of 0.1 percent interest for a period of 50 years. The technology used for bullet trains will help to increase the services of normal trains and the integration of the signaling system.
